This upcycled owl clock is made from various bits of salvage. I love making these sorts of things, and its great when various parts I’ve got in the workshop come to good use. I should throw more things out and de-clutter, but I usually hold out in case they would work for this type of project.
This clock I formed around an adorable little blue owl. I can’t remember how I came by him. There was no maker’s mark on it, and I can’t say it has any value, but all the same it amused me and I can be sentimental with things like this. Sadly, it was also broken and had been glued back together at some point, so I wanted to give it a new protective and useful home. So I built a clock around it!
The wooden case was a rather tacky modern jewellery box, which had a broken glass panel on the front. That had heavy layers of garish brown paint and plastic fittings. But it was made of actual wood, so I stripped that back and gave it a good sanding down and then a pleasing oiling. The only fitting salvaged from it were the hinges and the little magnet that holds the door in place.
I inserted a peg into the base of the inside, upon which the owl was attached (there being a hole on his bottom side). Then above him I added a shelf, so the inside of the clock would be opened up and small items hidden within.
The large clock dial is also salvage from my box of spares. That probably came from an inter-war wall clock of the German sort – I’d acquired it in a job lot of old dials.
Overall I was aiming for a slightly shabby appearance, as if this were an old clock the owl was nesting in. I refrained from overdoing it by adding more decorations to the case.
The clock mechanism and hands are brand new, the only new parts of this. Overall, I’m very happy with the final outcome! The Upcycled Owl Clock is listed for sale here.
